I was reading an al.com post about getting your preschooler ready for K5. I began to sweat a bit. K is going into K4 this fall at a local preschool. This checklist was making suggestions as to what they need to know before they get there. Some of the suggestions were : Cutting with scissors, sorting shapes, recognizing ABC's and writing your name, drawing stick figures and knowing their full address and phone numbers. Kids today have so much more expected of them than when I was a kid. When I was in K5 they taught you how to read, write, recognize colors and shapes, tie your shoes, etc. Now, you are behind in school if you can't do some of these tasks. Its like beating a nail on its head over and over again with this topic. I hear it everywhere now.
My mother says I stress over nothing when it comes to thinking about K in school. I think she is smart and will do well, but will it be enough? I don't want her self esteem to go down because she can't be the best and know everything right off the bat. Its a fine line you tread as a parent making sure they are successful and well rounded without making them conscious of their sometime mistakes and failures. What do you do? How do you resolve this? I know I am not the first parent to worry about these things, but this is my sweet baby girl. My first child God blessed me with 4 some odd years ago. We delight in her imagination and self assurance every day. You never know what she will come up with or decide to do. Its one of the best things about parenthood. Forgive my gushing over my child. Pretty soon she won't be this small. She's already talking about when she is 5 and she barely is 4.
So, I am about to go all out in making sure she is ready for school. She is learning her phone number, even though she tells me it is mine and then makes up her own. Her stick figure people are great, she is a great artist, she gets it from her mother :) ABC's and 123's are not a big deal. She gets bored with me testing her with it, no matter what the game. Her little voice, "Mommy, I already said that before! " complete with an eye roll or two.
On another note, K and I tested cupcake recipes today for L's bday on Saturday. L was napping and didn't get to join in on the fun, but she did get a cupcake sans icing when she woke up. I think its going to be a fun one :)
Well, I have rambled enough. I have assaulted your eyes with my bad grammer and sappy stories. Its off to bed now for this mommy complete with dreams of ABC's and 123's and wondering what she'll pick out to wear for her first day of school. Have I mentioned what a fashion diva she is? That's another day.
